UV Blacklight Buying Guide for Escape Rooms and Stage Designers

White-plus-UV versus flood-only, 395 nm versus 365 nm, and where a spot earns its place in a themed room.

2026-09-22

Designers usually need two rooms in one shell: a space that can be cleaned, reset and walked in ordinary light, and a space that reveals paint, fabric and props under UV. Buying only floods solves the second room and makes the first one miserable.

Start with the switchable fixtures

The dual-source downlight is a recessed 395 nm and white light in one can, 5 W to 30 W per source, cut-outs from Φ95 mm to Φ225 mm. Use it where a normal downlight already exists. The line light does the long corridor or the hall, at 180 W or 360 W total, IP66, white and UV at equal power.

Add a modular flood only when a wall, a backdrop or an outdoor approach has to be hit harder than a ceiling can. Add the 60° spot when one object has to read and the ceiling should not.

Specify the pigments with the lamps

Ask the set painter which band the pigments use. If they say “UV” without a number, assume 395 nm and test a sample. A 365 nm flood in a 395 nm room is a dim room, and it will be blamed on the fixture.
